Movie Review: Forbidden Planet (1956)

Don't let the poster fool you - this is one smart movie. Curious but not optimistic, I began watching to explore the origins of that iconic image we're all familiar with. What I got was a stylish 1950's version of the future (they predict the moon landing in the late 21st century) and a still relevant, telling look at human nature through the filter of those red scare-era eyes.

They missed the moon landing by about 150 years, but this movie had its influence; you can see where Star Wars and Trek are borne out of the film, even from the very first shot. It could be the performance of Leslie Nielsen and his men was so moving, that it actually inspired and enabled the moon landing to be bumped up a century or so.

It's impossible to write a real review without spoilers, so I'll just say, watch it. Don't look up the plot, just watch it. Oh, and Technicolor rules!
